I joined 46 Bty in April 68 and we did have m107s until we moved to Bulford in 72. There we had 105 packs and were part of the air mobile force. I remember going to Libya as part of that battle group. We had a spell of R&R at a place called Tamimi. We were told by the BC that
there was a sunken Roman Town just of the coast and he organised a competition to see who could recover the best Roman artefact. The prize was a crate of tenant’s larger. The one with the picture of a girl on it. Midge Alber got first prize for his piece of pot with a chip in the edge of it. He described it as a ROMAN ASHTRAY!!

I was attached to 46 Battery from HQ on the Libya trip in 69. I was with the late Jock McEwan in the signal vehicle.I remember the blue shorts we all wore on Talavera day....Chuddy Cambell has a lot to answer for! The jocks (KOSB) were all whistling at us on the march past... red neck!!
I Cogy, Midge, I remember too, also Jock McKay the medic. What about the queue for the "Dunny" and Mick Green (Officers Mess) was the only guy in the whole of "Chattem Camp" friggen tent area who was consipated!!
Allan.

Sat, 01 Nov 2008 11:19:09

Hi Allan. Do you remember Paddy Anderson. I remember him sitting on a rock outside his 180 pounder in Chattem camp. As a group of us walked by on the way to the Dunny he grinned, lifted one cheek and said "Its great to be able to do this again" He tried to fart and promptly shit himself!!!( in his nice Talavera blue shorts)

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

I was in 46/32regt with the 5.5s from 1956-58 stationed at Carlisle but the Redesdale firing ranges during the summer months. Thought we were on the moon being stationed up there in those days.Only one little local club which sold beer.
The train ride at 1am from Manchester to Newcastle took forever. The we caught an old bus which delivered newpapers and stopped at Otterburn.
Walked the rest of the way and arrived in camp to find out you were on a 24 guard duty. Happy Days???? 28shilling a week!! One shell blew the barrel off a 5.5 and killed a couple of guys

Two of the biggest mistakes in my life.

1 Joining the Army

2 Leaving it

It's good to see a lot of faces and names from the jolly times in 46th 1987 - 91. Scully, aka Spider, Bottle, Skullf****r, scurvey twin...etc.

As usual, I've had some complaints about the cost of the reunion and the distance to travel, so let me make it plain to all.

The reason I am charging £60 is as follows:

The cost of the hotel is £53 for 2 nights B&B. As yet, I don't know how much we will have to pay towards the cost of buffet and transport from the hotel to the venue and return. I'm shit at maths, so it has been rounded up to £60 to make thing easier for me. Depending on what prices the Bty charges, there may be an extra charge on the night, or there may be a refund. All in all, I can't see where else you would get a buffet and transport to and from the hotel for that price.

If anyone does not want to pay the extra, then the answer is simple - DON'T COME. Even better, they can organise the next reunion because I'm getting sick of the wingeing about distances, prices, venues etc. It's no bloody fun chasing people up who have said they'll attend then change their mind after you have booked and paid for the hotel.

As far as the distances are concerned, I try as best as possible to make it easy for everyone to attend. We have people travelling down from Scotland no matter where it is held. We have people travelling down from the north and we have people who travel up from the south and the west country. If you are not happy with the distance that you have to travel, send me your address and I'll endeavour to arrange for the next one to be held in your kitchen.

So, there you have it. Pay up or shut up - either way it's no skin off my nose.

OK, rant over, now I'm off for a cup of coffee and a sticky bun.

You might like to read this letter to the editor ~ ever notice how some people just seem to know how to write a letter?..

This one sure does!

This was written by an American woman, but oh how it also applies to the Canada, U.K. and Australia

THIS ONE PACKS A FIRM PUNCH

Written by a housewife in New York , to her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady.

'Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001 and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac from the nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania ?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a few Taliban were claiming to be tortured by a justice system of the nation they come from and are fighting against in a brutal insurgency.

I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief of which is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan ..

I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called 'insurgents' in Afghanistan come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques and behind women and children.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blows themselves up in search of
nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.

I'll care when the American media stops pretending that their freedom of speech on stories is more important than the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families waiting at home to hear about them when something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about an AMERICAN soldier roughing up an Insurgent terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank:

I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and 'fed special' food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being 'mishandled,' you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts:

I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled 'Koran' and other times 'Quran.' Well, Jim my Crack Corn you guessed it,

I don't care!!

If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to all your E-mail friends. Sooner or later, it'll get to the people responsible for this ridiculous behavior!

If you don't agree, then by all means hit the delete button.. Should you choose the latter, then please don't complain when more atrocities committed by radical Muslims happen here in our great Country! And may I add:

'Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Soldiers don't have that problem.'

I have another quote that I would like to add, AND.........I hope you forward all this.

One last thought for the day:

Only five defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

1. Jesus Christ

2. The British Soldier.

3. The Canadian Soldier.

4. The US Soldier, and

5. The Australian Soldier

One died for your soul, the other 4 for your freedom.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO PASS THIS ON, AS MANY SEEM TO FORGET ALL OF THEM.

AMEN!

There's no way you could organise a reunion for that cheap price down south so I think your doing fab getting it for £60 for 2 days.

Men eh!!! moan moan moan

You would more fun organising a Ex-wifes/Wifes reunion tho it would be expensive but us girls would pay LOL

Hi Guys,
I was with 32 Store Section from '65 to 68.
We made it harder for you to get stuff than from Malcy Balls that ran the FAMTO, Sorry chaps, under the watchful eye of 'Andy Capp' Capt Caplin the TQ.
I remember Jock McKay, Geordie Tennant, Pat Robinson,'Chinky' Miles,'Trigger' Sear the Provo with his 2i/c Bdr Boyde.
'Chubby' Cambell, I ran in to him again when I was posted to 94 Loc.
There are several more I can 'picture' but not recall the names, probably an age thing!!
I have read through the site and remember a Jimmy Forsythe, in fact he now lives just round the corner from me but cannot remember any of the other names on here, perhaps someone remembers me?

Hi Guys,
Just remebered, perhaps I'm best forgotten for some reason?
I heard there was to be a 32 reunion last year at Larkhill so wrote to the Adjutant for details.
I never did get a reply but it turned out it was a 'Farewell to Pheonix' parade.
Even so, I would still liked to have attended as I did five years years with 156 Bty 94 Loc as well, as was pointed out in my letter to explain my association with the Royal Artillery as an Ordnance man.

Nice to hear from you Dai! Yeah it was a real surprise when Spoog turned up on here and excellent to hear from him. Speaking of strangers, good to hear that all is ok with you! Did you ever get your ID card sorted out? As good as the stick drawing was, i don't think it was a very good likeness. Mind you they did let you through passport control at Gutersloh if memory serves, so perhaps it was better than i remember(LOL!)
All the best...Tom.

Eddy McConnell

Sat, 03 Oct 2009 02:54:42

I take it from the lack of replies that nobody remembers the guys I mentioned.
Galbriathe was the CO and Newman was the RSM, he always brought his Alsation dog on parade with him.
Surely there must be someone as old as me that can remember.
Then there was the Exercise in the Larzac mountains. We all drove down stopping off at some odd places on the way.
The first stop was Frankfurt am Main in a US camp, then the next stop was a Rubbish tip outside a castle, the rats made a helluva noise all night long and the final stop before arriving in Larzac was some waste ground by some Multi story buildings, some built and occupied by 'very poor people' and some still being built by 'Ittinerent labourers' needless to say we had to nail everything down to stop it walking.
I doubt there will ever be an exercise like that again, the fuel bill alone must have been horrendous.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

There doesn't seem to be an 'Editing' facility so I have to add another post.
I did seven years with the Royal Artillery and was an 'Honary Member' of the mess in Larkhill when 94 Loc had it.
When 32 Regt took over, and shortly after deployed to Ireland, the RSM said he was suspending all Honary Members and would revue them on return from Ireland.
That was the last four of us HM's ever heard from them.
When I came out of the Army I was employed on the 'out of hours' security of the Pheonix trial site so was still fairly closely bonded with the RA.
I wrote to the Adjutant to try and get an invite to the 'Farewell to Pheonix' parade but didn't even get an answer from him.
I have an amount of hearing loss but still have 100% of my feelings that can easily be hurt !!!

Phil and Eddy...The problem is that after 79 the Bty went through many changes to it's role and personnel, so many of the chaps you knew may have moved on or left the army, and are not aware of this site or the fact that the OCA exists. So please don't be offended if you don't get a response from those that never knew you. That said, we have a very strong OCA and all ex members (attached inc) are more than welcome to join. As you will i'm sure be aware through the posts on here, we get together every year for our annual reunion, and these are great events and worth a visit should you wish to come. They are a chance to pull up a sandbag and swing the lamp with old mates you served with, and to meet fellow Talaverans you didn't. Monty is the main instigator of events and will i'm sure welcome you both with open arms, but no kisses. Sometime in the new year the details will appear on here and you can arrange to come to the next event should you wish to? We're a good bunch so do yourself a favour and join the association proper by contacting Monty.
If you know of any others, then tell them of our existence, the more the merrier!!
All the best and Welcome!!
Tom.

Hi Tom,
I gave the pictures of the M 107 SP at Wietzendorfe to Monty.
I was sure someone (retired) would remember them.
The TQ, Capt Caplin gave us all a lecture about how secretive we must be about our new kit and the chances of us being accosted in the local pubs about it!!
It turned out the Bundeswer, over the road, had the same kit and better spares back-up than us!!
RSM Newman, with his Alsation that accompanied him everywhere.
I went fishing with him quite often and once when we were fishing a lake at Hohne, I heard some shooting and when I checked it out, he had hooked a Pike/Zander and didn't have his landing net so was trying to shoot it with a .22 revolver he kept in his fishing box!!!
Ahh yes, happy days.

got this sent from my brother, thought you would like a laugh :

Latest Terror Threat Levels Around The World:

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588 when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards". They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile and as usual are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their allies, just in case.

And in the southern hemisphere...

New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA!".
Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the air force being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath – their words not mine), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which is "I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is canceled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

MOD Answering machine...

From the Facebook page: PROUD TO HAVE SERVED IN THE BRITISH ARMY

Thank you for calling the British Army. I'm sorry, but all our units are out at the moment, or are otherwise engaged. Please leave a message with your country, name of organisation, the region, the specific crisis and a number at which we can call you. As soon as we have sorted out Kosovo, Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, The Congo, marching up and down bits of tarmac in London and compulsory health and safety at work training, we will return your call.

Please speak after the tone or, if you require more options, listen to the following numbers:

a. If your crisis is small and close to the sea, press 1 for the Royal Marines.

b. If your concern is distant, with a tropical climate, good hotels and can be solved by one or two low-risk bombing runs, please press 2 for the Royal Air Force. (Please note that this service is not available after 1630 or at weekends.)

c. If your enquiry concerns a situation which can be resolved by a warship, some bunting, flags, a damn good cocktail party and a first class marching band, please write, well in advance, to the First Sea Lord, The Royal Navy, Whitehall, London SW1.

Thank you for calling and if you are interested in joining the Army (please, please, please, although retention is fine and we are right up to strength) and wish to be liberalised yet paradoxically AGAI'd, paid little, have premature Arthritis, put your wife and family (or gay lover) in a condemned hut miles from civilisation; and are prepared to work your balls off day and night whilst watching the Treasury eroding your origanal terms and conditions and promising a better pension , serving mainly in sandy climes, whilst picking up rubbish and putting out house fires all over the UK, while fireman and binmen have a little holiday; then please stay on the line. Your call will shortly be passed onto a bitter, passed-over Recruiting Sergeant in a horrendously fronted, yet grotty little office down by the railway station.

Have a nice day and thank you again for trying to contact The British Army

Gents,
Just to let you know that i recently completed a fairly comprehensive history of our Battery. It spans from it's inception right through to the present day. If anyone wishes to read it, then it can be accessed on the Arrsepedia website (Not the ideal place i realise),but there it is. The process was difficult due to there being very little info generally available. So, if i have made any glaring mistakes or omissions, then apologies. I will be more than willing to accept constructive criticism or corrections should they be required, and would appreciate feedback. Please give it a look and see what you think? Our Bty has a far greater history than many would imagine. That's not just me being biased, you understand. As i said before, it's fairly comprehensive, but not exhaustive, i have neither the time or the money. Hopefully, you will enjoy the effort, and learn something else about our 46 Bty!

Reference my search for information on the Bty. Monty sent me a link to a page about 3rd Field Regiment RA, which was very interesting indeed (Well done Monty). However, when i contacted the poster he was able to verify that the man whose story it was, had been a former member of our Bty during WW2. 46 Bty was then titled 18/62 Bty, so he may well be the oldest Talaveran alive 90+...I shall update any information, as and when i receive it!

Sat, 10 Apr 2010 06:03:31

update on last post...John Mallen the old Talaveran i mentioned in my previous post, was a Gnr/Artificer RA WITH 18/62 Bty of 3rd Fld Regt RA. He remembers the Bty driving from India and fighting through Iraq, Iran, Palestine and Egypt to fight in the North Africa campaign, where he along with many elements of 3rd Field Regiment and their parent 29th Indian brigade were overrun and then captured by the Afrika Corps whilst defending the El Adem Box on 15th June 1942. From there he was sent to Italy as a POW, to camp PG54. However, when the North African campaign was won by the allies, The Italians knew they were next to be invaded so stopped guarding the British prisoners. He made good his escape from captivity and lived of the land for some months. The Germans were hunting the countryside for escaped POW'S and executing them when found. Fortunately, he eventually found himself adopted by an Italian family sympathetic to their cause, who fed and housed them for a long time. The Germans threatened to have these sympathisers shot, so John once again found himself living off the land and avoiding the Germans. After a couple of weeks, they received a message that the Germans had gone and they could return to the village. This they did and spent six more weeks there, but decided to split up, some went north toward neutral Switzerland and others tried to make their way through the German lines and back to the advancing British. John chose the latter and after some ten months in the Italian countryside, found himself working alongside the Italian partisans, who were trying to disrupt the German retreat. It was here that he encounteed a British Jeep, the patrol took his details and that of his Italian family but left him where he was. They were a Recce unit and were in the middle of a job. Finally a letter arrived from Rome, he was to report to Allied Screening there. This he did and after all his details had been confirmed was sent by train to Naples from where he was repatriated back to Blighty.
Today John lives just outside Larkhill, so is still very much attached to the Gunners.
As a by thought...John served in 18 (Talavera) Fld Bty RA, so i am assuming that our Bty was among the first to be given an honour title? That being the case, does anyone know when this would have occured, i'm thinking 30s perhaps?? Any help welcome!!

ATB...Tom

I have had an enjoyable ten years, but it is now time hand over to someone younger and fitter than me who will be in a position to carry on for some time longer.

My resignation will take effect immediately, now it is up to you to get together and elect a new secretary.

Morning all, the website www.46btyoca.com requires renewing in the next two weeks. Due to the lack of use, I'm asking yourselves if it is worthwhile renewing or should it be left to die a peaceful death?

Tom

Monty, i honestly believe it should be kept alive. As can be seen from previous posts it's ideal for passing specific Bty news or information. You've done a great job in setting it up, and it is very much appreciated by us, even though we may not use it as much as we could. Keep it going mate!...If you need any help with funds, just let me know and i'll divi up my share, as i'm sure will others.

Hi to all the Talavera massive, Its been a while since i was on here as we had to move and get back on line. Just to let everyone know iam still in the stay behind OP in Paderborn and still working for Naafi selling burgers and stuff to the troops. Sorry i couldn't make the last reunion as it was a bit short notice and i had other commitments on. If someone could let me know when the next one is then i will try and make it in time. A message for Rob Curtis, Are you still in Munster as i seem to have lost contact with you mate. I was there several weeks ago visiting my kids. Popped into the Landsman, still the same shithole and the doors where still hanging off. Best wishes to you all. Tally ho old beans.

Spoog,
I'm sure Rob is currently in Telgte?
He is available on facebook if memory serves, as is the 46 (Talavera) Bty Old Comrades site. Join it, and you will see all the details of up coming reunions etc. Plus a shed load of photo's from those days of yore, and many other names you may wish to hear from.

Good to hear all is fine with you...Tom

Monty
After spending so much effort in getting it up and running it would be a pity to see it slip away. may not post very often but always check to see who's about and whats going on.
Come on all show your support!!!!

Yeah Spoog,
At the last reunion, Billy Alexander volunteered and was duly voted. He is in the process of organising the next reunion, which will be held in Sunderland i think? As you say mate, it would be a sorry event if it disappeared. Any chance Mrs Schmitler will let you come out to play at the next one? Keep your eye on the site, details will appear quite soon i hope?

Hi Tommy,
Just to let you all know Mrs Schmitler left me back in 95 when we went to 12Regt in Dortmund. I was on a course in Larkhill, when i got back she was gone, kids gone and quarter empty. She took the lot! F*****G BITCH!. Been divorced now for over 10 years. Hooray!.
I have not re-married but have a long standing girlfriend now. She is from Scotland and her name is June. Spoke to Rob curtis the other day on the phone and we are looking to meet up at the end of July.

Oops! Sorry mate, i didn't know. You mentioned Mrs Schmitler in one of your earlier posts, so i assumed all was ok on that front. Still nice to hear that you are good now! I assume you and Rob will be meeting up in Deutchland, rather than Blighty? If so, have a good time mate!!

Hi Tommy Spoogle ere, Met up with Rob Curtis(satan) and Glen Powell friday night in Telgte. I couldn't find the old City Saloon bar. We went out to Warendorf and found an Irish bar. Full of Gothics so we only stayed for 1 beer. Then went into another bar but didnt realise it at first untill we noticed it was full of men. So me pissed up started singing "I wanna take you to a GAY bar". Got some funny looks. We got a taxi back to Robs singing "frigging in the wrigging". Taxi dvr was doing 200 kph to get us back quick. I got to bed at 4 o clock saturday morning SMASHED! A good night and a good laugh by all.

Glad you had a good time Spoog, but you are really going to have to try and avoid those particular types of "gentlemens" clubs in the future, especially when they're called the Blue Oyster (LOL)...Be Good!
